...He knew not how much time it took before sound returned to him, slowly bringing him back to his senses. Heart beating. Heavy breathing. Ringing in his ears. Muffled voices. Wails, whimpering. Distant cracking of wood.
The fog had been dispersing steadily.
Mustering the last of his feeble strength left, Amadeus struggled to open his eyes - they stung and immediately watered the second his lids lifted as much as half an inch. Light weakly shone through regardless, a telltale of much time passing since he was rendered unconscious back in the celebration cave.
Only he wasn't there anymore.
For a couple moments the rose-furred wolf was processing his surroundings, eyes flickering from one worn-out wolven form laying beside him, to another. Other wolves fidgeted about, fretting over those laying down; Amadeus could make out splothes of blood littering some of their pelts, iron and sweat-loaded smell filling the already unnaturaly heated, fusty air.
It was hard to breathe. It was getting harder to breathe the more Amadeus shifted around, trying ever so slightly to raise his throbbing head. The pungs electrifying his body quickly dampened his resolve, and painful gasps escaped him. Immediately his lungs shriveled painfully. His chest tightened, heavy with what felt like a gallon of ash and cinder inside of it.
He tried to make a sound - a call, a question, a plea, a name, - but the bitterness building up in his throat was all-consuming. Coughs started rattling his body, begging for release. But it didn't come - not in the way his body wanted. There was too little air and too little space left to absorb it in.
Painful, each cough was so painful.
When the fit paused, Amadeus felt every limb trembling, every muscle twitching, his insides churning menacingly. Breathing was a strain. Each breath - a threat of another coughing fit launching as if by signal.
Engrossed in pain, the rosy wolf had barely noticed another one fretting over him; a local healer, she likely was, inquiring his state, murmuring words of comfort he barely rendered as ache spread all over his stomach, chest, throat and head. He tried to reply, but his voice gave out, coming out a hoarse croak less discernible than a cricket's whispering.
He watched the healer's ears falling back in concern.
She spoke of... something. Amadeus listened in half, still grasping for air, his body battling the damage done by the wildfire and all the inhaled smoke. Words and meanings jumbled up in his exhausted mind.
His lungs... his throat... They burned... Damaged...
His heart lurched at the realisation.
No. No, no, no, no, no, this wasn't happening to him!
He opened his maw to object, but no words came out, only more coughs and gasps. Hot tears burned, obscuring the already fog-filled vision. The ache trapped his entire body, only allowing it to tremble in a voiceless protest. This was not how it was supposed to go. This was not how he was supposed to survive!
He was not supposed to lose the one thing that had made him whole.
Amadeus swallowed a massive lump, choking back on a sob.
What if he was already damaged beyond repair?
